Girl Scout Pet Care Badge
Scout and Brownie Troops are invited to download the Pet Care Badge Binder by clicking on the image or here.
The Santa Cruz SPCA and the Girl Scouts of Monterey Bay are pleased to offer the Pet Care Badge awarded to Girl Scouts who complete classes and activities related to the responsibility involved in caring for domestic pets. We have collaborated to offer this badge because we believe that these skills need to be learned early on and will not only prepare Girl Scouts to one day care for an animals of their own but will also teach them about the role pets play in our society and how important our kindness, compassion, and choices are to our animals companions. The more we know about them the better they fit into our lives.

Adoptions at Austin Avain Rescue and Rehabilition
Stories Of Multiple Pets is hosting the Radio For Rescue project beginning August 7th – November 1st. Benefiting from this project is one of four nonprofit animal organizations:
Jerry Nolan oversees Austin Avain Rescue and Rehabilitation in south Austin. His goal is to educate the public about keeping birds as household pets. These creatures require endless hours of intellectual and emotional interaction to replace what they would normally experience in their natural habitat. Evasion of predators, foraging for food and procreation activities must be replaced. Inattention to these needs frequently leads to self-destructive behaviors such as feather plucking, skin mutilation, screaming and aggression.

At the present time (Sunday, September 5, 2010) there are several birds ready for adoption.

Giddings is a young 15 year old blue & gold Macaw. He requires 2 to 3 hours of interaction and will have a life span between 85 – 100 years. The average monthly cost to keep him happy is $250.

Sunny is a mature bird between the ages of 5 – 8 years. One hour a day is the minimum time frame of interaction for Sunny. This Cockatiel can live 25 years. The average cost to ensure Sunny is happy and health is $50 per month.

Cocorriqwa is a mature 18 year old Mexican Red Head Amazon. This loving creature requires at least 3 hours per day of interaction. The average monthly cost for this Amazon is $150. This Mexican Red Head will live up to 65 years of age.

Pickles is a mature (Green) Military Macaw around 15 years of age. This Macaw’s life span is 85 – 100 years. Pickles requires a minimum of 3 hours per day of interaction. The average cost to ensure Pickles is happy and health is $250 per month.

Verdis is a mature Hahns Macaw. Even though he’s small compared to the other Macaws he too requires 3 hours of interaction per day. The average cost to ensure peace in the family is $120 per month. Verdis’ life span is 65 years.

Adoptions at Street Cat Rescue
Stories Of Multiple Pets is hosting the Radio For Rescue project beginning August 7th – November 1st. Benefiting from this project is one of four nonprofit animal organizations:
Donna Powell is the founder of Street Cat Rescue located in Round Rock. Her program provides a humane solution for the community cats of the Austin area. Donna educates the public on Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) programs for feral cats and adopts out socialized cats.

At the present time (Sunday, September 5, 2010) there are several cats ready for adoption.

Apple Jack and brothers Buddy and Skipper would love to be adopted in the same home but if not, Apple Jack and Skipper should be kept together as they are more bonded with each other. These guys are last year’s kittens so they have been in foster care for quite a while and longing for their forever home!! Apple Jack has gorgeous coloring and the most luminous green eyes!! He’s a little shy at first but quickly warms up and purrs. Still very playful…loves the star chaser toy and cat trees.

Binky, a female brown tabby, was rescued at Garden Ridge Pottery as a 4 month old kitten. She is very petite and became tamed immediately, apparently deciding the “home” life was a much better one! She is pretty outgoing and loves to win people over when they come to visit. She is a small adult cat (about 8lbs) and would be a wonderful new addition to your family.

Your heart will melt when you look into those adorable eyes- and see what an innocent face this one has! Buddy loves to follow you around. This guy is all personality- just looking at him makes you smile. He’s an adventurer…and longs to have his own person. He would be great if adopted out with brothers but is the most independent of the three- Skipper and Apple Jack are more bonded…but they all love each other. A Three-for-one adoption fee would apply to keep the brothers together!!!

Possible sister to Scotty. Princess P is a beautiful, short-haired diluted calico who was rescued with Scotty. Very petite and dainty and very affectionate! A very sweet and adorable cat.

All personality, Skipper is full of charm! Is used to small dogs and bigger cats- fits right into any situation! He is very affectionate and really charms people that walk by him at adoption events! Last year’s kittens..this boy is brothers with Apple Jack and Buddy and are seeking forever home!! A special Three-for-one adoption fee would apply when the family is kept together!!

Trixie is going to be a very small adult. She quickly showed us that she was not a feral cat but a loving, comical and adorable cat that needs a second chance. She loves to get under the covers and dive up for her head pets. She is great with kids and dogs. She can be somewhat temperamental with some other cats but not all and quickly adjusts. A VERY unique cat!
