Domestic Violence Pet Shelters in Texas

Pet Haven

Providing short-term foster care for pets of families living in domestic violence shelters.

At the core of domestic violence are the issues of power and control. As the “weakest” members of a family, companion animals are often used as a tool by batterers to achieve and maintain control over their victims. Linda*, a 36-year-old mother of two, faced a difficult dilemma as she was preparing to leave an abusive relationship.

On many occasions, her husband had threatened to kill Boomer, the family’s dog, if Linda ever left him. She and her children would be welcome at the women’s shelter but Boomer would not. In an effort to assist in this very difficult transition, SPCA of Texas Pet Haven volunteers provide temporary housing and care for a maximum of 30 days while the pets’ owners are rebuilding their lives.

If you or someone that you care about is in need of temporary foster care for their animals while residing in an area domestic violence shelter, please contact the SPCA of Texas.

All animals entering the Pet Haven foster program must be spayed or neutered and current on their vaccinations.
